History
Founded by Lennart Lajboschitz, the first Tiger store opened in Copenhagen in 1995. Originally a surplus store, it sold cheap merchandise of all sorts for 10 kroner (€1.5). By 2000 40 stores had opened in major Danish cities.
In 2001, the first non-Danish Tiger store opened in Reykjavik, Iceland. Nine years later, Tiger had stores in 10 countries and the 100th store opened for business. In 2013, Tiger stores served more than 39 million customers across Europe and Japan. By the end of 2015 there will be close to 500 Tiger stores in 25 countries.
When Tiger was first founded, the stores were known by the name “Zebra”. That name was changed to the more tongue-in-cheek “Tiger”. In Danish, Tiger is pronounced tee’-yuh, which means both tiger and “tenner” (10 kroner). However, the stores are called “TGR” in Sweden and Norway, “Flying Tiger” in the Netherlands, and “Flying Tiger Copenhagen” in Japan.
The concept
Tiger is a Danish design store with a quirky, ever-changing selection of own-designed and branded products at affordable prices, all in whole Euros. 80 % of all products are priced at under €5, and none costs more than €30.
Over time, Tiger’s business focus has shifted from cheap to unique, from generic to own-designed products, from single to multiple price levels, from a spontaneous to a deliberate assortment.
Products
The Tiger product assortment covers everyday categories such as kitchen utensils, office supplies, toys, hobby and crafts, party products, food, stationery, electronics, sports, gadgets and fashion accessories.
Most of the products are original, own-branded designs. They are stylish and colorful, practical, original and often surprising. They have a Scandinavian flavor and are often humorous.
The combination of desirable, quirky products and affordable prices is consistently reported to be Tiger’s special retail edge.
The typical Tiger package is almost as distinctive as Tiger’s products. The packing is simple, straightforward and Scandinavian.
Tiger stores
Tiger has been described as “like a high-street Ikea without the furniture, it sells practical objects that are well designed and beautifully packaged. And as a “Danish design discount store”, with “good quality and low prices too.”
Tiger shops are all located on main squares, on busy pedestrian streets or in popular shopping centers. They are typically between 200 and 300 m2, laid out as mazes that guide customers through every department on their way to the till. The design is minimalistic and Danish in style with white walls, wooden floors, warm lighting and simple fittings in natural materials.
